Melchior loves stars - and he's a star too!


I wouldn’t call myself a star but I do like stars. They are amazing and beautiful and sparkly. Ever since I was a boy I have enjoyed looking up at the sky at night. For many years I often met up with my friends in the evening. Together we gazed at the many stars. But one night we saw something different. We saw a new, very bright star. Somehow we knew this was no ordinary star. We decided to follow it.

For many months we travelled. Each night we eagerly searched the sky to see where the star was. Eventually we arrived in the land of the Jews, known as Judea. We decided to go to the main city called Jerusalem. We asked the people there, “Where is the baby who was born to be the king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east. We have come to worship him.” The local ruler, King Herod the Great, summoned us to a secret meeting. He sent us to Bethlehem. Apparently a long time ago a prophet called Micah had written that a ruler would come from Bethlehem. So the leading priests and teachers of the law believed the Christ would be born there. The Christ is the anointed one, chosen by God to save people from their sins.


When we left King Herod, we were so happy to see the special star again. It went before us until it stopped above the place where the child was with his mother, Mary. The child was called Jesus. We bowed down and worshipped him. We gave him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh that we had brought with us – expensive gifts fit for a king. There is something very special about that child. I think he is going to become a star himself one day.

Billingshurst Primary School staff are Stars of Christmas 2020!

After what has been a very difficult year for everyone, we think Billingshurst Primary School staff (and children) are stars! The school has needed to find new ways of running to keep staff, children and the community safe this year. They've had to adapt to remote learning, as well as changing the way they teach in class. They've had to be creative and flexible to ensure every child has the best opportunity to learn and feel safe. On top of all this they are having to deal with the emotional and mental impact 2020 has had on the children (as well as the staff and families). Every single staff member has worked tirelessly, and in very challenging circumstances, to make the experience at school as normal as possible for all the children. Both the staff and children have all shown such resilience and dedication this year. Vicar David's Stars of Christmas 2020 are ...

…the children at St. Mary’s Church! Through the long months of lockdown and beyond, their response to the Explorers videos has been a constant source of encouragement and hope to me. Text messages, pictures of artwork and video clips have come rolling into the Vicarage hub, demonstrating time and again that children often have the most profound insights into the ways of God and that we as adults have a lot to learn from them.
